Trained to Perform Tasks

You can buy a fake service dog vest for a disability, but that doesn’t mean you have a service dog—and the public knows that. That’s why speaking with a professional dog trainer is so important when determining if your dog’s temperament would be a good fit for certified service dog training.

Because certified service dogs are allowed inside businesses and on public transportation, their behavior must be impeccable. They should remain calm and focused even around distractions. Otherwise, they will be unable to perform their duties, which could put their owners and others at risk.

Service dogs can help with many physical, mental, and medical needs. However, we do not offer training for medical alert service dogs, or guide dogs.

Service Dog Training Offered by Buffalo Niagara Dog Training

  1. Psychiatric Service Dog Training – service dog training for those struggling with mental health. (i.e., depression, anxiety, PTSD)
  2. Mobility Support Service Dog Training – service dog training for those who need a helping hand (or paw!). This is also known as a mobility support dog, and the dog must be 40% of the owner’s height and 50% of the owner’s weight.

Steps to Certifying a Service Dog

In order to be a trained service dog, they must excel in the following areas:

  1. Basic obedience
  2. Public access
  3. Task work

By the end of training, your service animal will be able to perform tasks like:

  • Blocking
  • Deep pressure therapy
  • Medication retrieval
  • Behavior interruption
